Fog with patches of blue

When we first got to the lighthouse, there was a busload of Japanese tourists scampering all over the island. We were trying to figure out logistics, but by the time we opened, they had all returned to the bus! I guess there was a time thing going on.

There were plenty of other families waiting to tour--including one from Carson City, but they didn't know my sister. One guy was from Milwaukee (I swear he was 6'6") so he and Cary talked about Wisconsin.

This picture was taken as we left the lighthouse, about 12:20--still pretty foggy and cool.

But when I looked toward town, patches of blue managed to pop up here and there.

Cary's sister will be here Wednesday. We have tomorrow off, so I hope to get some laundry done and maybe pick up some things at the store. Cary plans to do some housework! We need to add on a room to hold the stuff we normally would throw in the back room at home when company comes!

Nice weather today

We took the long way to work this morning (finding yard sales, but nothing worth buying).

It was still foggy before 9:30.

I am going to have to pay attention to the lens before I take a picture. It didn't open all the way for a few shots. Cary and a seagull pose for me.

We bought Subway sandwiches, took a thermos of coffee and found a picnic table with a great view of the ocean for lunch after work.

You can see the lighthouse in the center of the picture if you look carefully. This was our view from our picnic spot.

County Fair

Before work we had time to check out some yard sales. We went to this neat house last year--didn't find anything this time.

It was colder today than yesterday, not sure it ever got above 60 degrees.

This fair was just our size--we managed to see all the exhibits in just a few hours. Very nice.

And a car show, what more can you ask?

This 1950 Studebaker is the first car I learned to recognize as a very young kid. I asked my father if cars had names like people...and they did! Now it is a little more difficult to tell one from another, but I think I am still pretty good with the oldies!

In the arts and crafts exhibit there were projects people had created by just looking at a picture. This caught our eye because it is a house in Eureka that Cary took a picture of and is hanging in our hall.

The quilts were impressive.

Hard to tell, but these are the produce entries! Since the fair opened yesterday, they are looking somewhat wilted and weary.

This lady was dancing to the music of the performing band!

Because I had never had a funnel cake, I had to do some research...Cary and I split this Bavarian Crème. It was tasty, but now that I have done it, on to other research!

Fog

Colder this morning! And for a good reason. Fog enveloped the town for several hours.*

Compare this picture taken at 9:30 a.m. with ones I took yesterday about the same time. Cary is lugging his galoshes over with the hope that he never has to use them. Ken, one of the keepers, was glad to see them. If they fit, he will use them to dig up a water line that needs repair. He didn't bring that kind of footwear with him!

I took this about 11:15 as we were leaving work. Still chilly!

The tide came in quickly--we did not get across a minute too soon. The last group to take the tour is the bunch on the left; they may have gotten a little damp as they rushed across.

We had a great first day, short--but most of the days will be that way due to the tides. Ken and Barbie are friendly and knowledgeable--he is a Civil War buff, has done re-enactments. He also plays the French horn! Their son, Danny, is here too. I may get pictures of everyone before the end of the month.

Another wonderful day

Our plan was to get out to the lighthouse before tours began, so we could see the new computer system (new to us, that is) and talk to the keepers, go over strategy (it is different every day, who am I kidding?), etc., but Ken and Barb had already begun the tours, since the tide would prevent the lighthouse from being open too long).

I feel like a new tourist every year; some things change, but this old sea captain has been here for awhile.

Cary is reading about dolos--

A dolos is a concrete block in a complex geometric shape weighing up to 20 tons, used in great numbers to protect harbour walls from the erosive force of ocean waves. They were developed in East London, a port city in South Africa, in 1963.*

We both got haircuts today, can't tell much here though! Just another nice day to sit outside and read.

August 2

I did not take any pictures today; we took it easy--started out by watching Psycho! Neither of us had ever seen it.

Made a hair appointment, took some walks, visited The Purple Cat thrift store (Cary found car magazines), and went out for Mexican food for dinner.

Pictures tomorrow; we are going out to the lighthouse to meet the couple we will be working with--Barbie and Ken!

Fun and Games

The time and temperature came out blurry--at 9:34 a.m. it was 59 degrees!

We were on our way to an estate sale--must have been held over just for us!

Cary got some L brackets and an adjustable wrench. The guy's workshop had every kind of tool you can imagine--should have gotten a picture!

I got a pretty plate (yellow, not seen too well here), a box of buttons (under the Special K glass mug), a container designed to hold thread--and the thread, some Velcro, Stitchwitchery and a blueprint book. All for $7.

I sorted the buttons, will donate all the boring white and beige ones. There was also a broken Brownie Scout pin, many paperclips, nails and screws, safety pins...assorted lint, some pretty smooth pebbles and a shell in the container.

We went by the Museum to renew our membership and buy postcards, stopped at a thrift store where I got a magazine and a brand new pair of small scissors that I hope are better than my Wal-Mart purchase of a few weeks ago! 

Cary used the time to reinforce the chairs--why he needed the L-brackets!

Later this guy pulled in and Cary helped him park. Wow! He told Cary he recently got the truck for $15,000, over a million miles on it--has a bunk bed and a gigantic dog cage in it.

I managed to get two loads of laundry done, still have some more to do. All of the trips to the laundry room and back helped me log over 10,000 steps today!
