Eating and Thrifting

We started the day at JoAnn's Fabrics (Donna, Susan and I), so Susan could get a new pillow form for a great cat pillow she found while out "picking" awhile ago. I took out the stitching and the ancient stuffing last night, inserted the new form and stitched it back up when we got home after our day's adventures--picture coming tomorrow!

By 11:00 a.m. we were hungry, so Susan suggested the Hungry Shark in Coos Bay. Very good.

We really had good luck at the thrift stores--four or five of them. While Susan and I were in a consignment shop, Cary spotted this Mustang and borrowed Susan's camera. He will explain his reasons here:

 this felt like a sceen from American Grafitti, where Suzanne Summers kept appearing in the T-bird. This is a '66 Mustang outfitted to look like the Hertz rental racers.  Hertz didn't intend for them to be rented racers, but that was what they became. This one was spot on with just a couple of exceptions. Overall it was very nicely done.I could see myself cruising Tucson in it.

When the sun comes out tomorrow I plan to take a few pictures of our treasures (you know you are curious)! Great day--thank you, Susan. And thanks to your cousin in Oklahoma for lunch!

A Day With Susan

I met Susan 40 years ago when we taught together at a new school in Tucson. She moved back to Oregon several years ago and we stayed in touch. It is always so much fun to visit. I love her yard.

And so do the deer.

This little yearling is not very afraid, just properly cautious.

 Susan finds vinyl purses at thrift stores and yard sales, punches holes in the bottoms and uses them for planters!

By setting the camera on the truck I was able to run and get in the picture.

Skip took this after we ate at Griff's in Winchester--great seafood. I had salmon and chips. Somewhere along the line I am going to get back to being more sensible, probably in August!

Our First Oregon Campground

After being here for five weeks, there is a lot to do before we can pull the trailer out and hit the road for Oregon. This is one of the last things--unplugging the electrical cord.

Outside of Gold Beach we get to Honey Bear Campground. We have stayed here before on nights they have served supper and played polka music. The sign underneath says it is also the Black Forest Kitchen. Cary can hardly wait to buy some ham and German chocolate. The owner was able to escape East Germany when he was a very young boy.

This must be the guy who has the horse back riding business here.

Before more exploration of the camp and surrounding areas, we had to visit our favorite bookstore in town. I also found a fabric store. The owners had moved here from Tucson in 2008! We really enjoyed talking to them, but I forgot to ask their names.

And then just a short walk over to the beach. I wore my hat for the occasion!

Meet Don

Today was our last day of work, but rather than focus on that (always hard to leave the lighthouse), Cary wrote about one of our neighbors in the RV park.

Meet Don, a retired dairy farmer from Fresno. He is one month older than my dad, born in April of 1920, making him 93! He fishes every day, works out on a rowing machine (you can see it propped up in the picture) and just bought the new 5th wheel. He told me he almost received his first traffic ticket last week. The officer saw that he was 93 and still had his CDL (commercial driving license). He got off with a warning to slow down. This 93-year-old youngster is quite the inspiration. I first met Don several years ago and we look forward to seeing each other again next year.

Last Day Working Together

I hope the Jussels have had as much fun working with us as we have had working with them. The time has gone by quickly!

Craig set up a tripod to try getting all six of us in a picture; we were not sure if he was successful or not by the time the lighthouse opened for tours.

July 17, Overcast, Not as Cold

A tug boat was out pulling a barge this morning as we got ready to cross for work. Harbor repairs will probably be going on for awhile after the March 2011 tsunami following the earthquake in Japan.

Cary got a good look through his binoculars, but I wasn't quick enough to get a picture before he put them down.

Craig was down at the water loading sand in preparation for creating a flower bed.

We ended up having a short work day because construction workers showed up (early) to start installing a vent in the lantern room. It gets pretty stuff in there. Mary and Craig were pretty sure they could handle the tours without us. Tomorrow will be our last day to work together--the time has really gone quickly! Every year we learn so much about this lighthouse and about Crescent City and it seems there is less time to share the information.

Foggy and cold, about 180 from yesterday

This is a picture from a few days ago; the weather was a repeat of that day. We are so glad that we had sunshine and blue sky yesterday so we could really appreciate and enjoy our day off. Tours went well today, as usual, so the fog didn't keep anyone home. Who knows what tomorrow will bring!
