Emporia, Kansas

Before leaving Pratt, Cary wanted to be sure I got a picture of this windmill missing a blade, demonstrating some of the ferocity of the Kansas winds.
This storm shelter in the park also attests to the force of the winds. Luckily, we didn't have to find out how well it worked!

The drive to Emporia was relatively short. We bought a Sunday paper in Pratt, watched Charles Osgood on Sunday morning, checked email and had a nice drive to the RV park for lunch.
This is not our 5th wheel, but is one that is now being made in Chanute, KS, where our HitchHiker was made (and is not being made anymore...rats). Very pretty. We are planning a trip to Chanute on our way back to Tucson.

Parked across the way from us in the campground is this blue pickup truck. Look carefully on the roof. You will notice a concrete block. Many people in Kansas believe that this will help the truck remain on the ground during a tornado.

I want to add that the Emporia Gazette that I saw in the newspaper box next to the RV office had a headline about the mystery writer James Patterson donating money for scholarships to the Emporia State University. I always like to hear about good deeds like this!
