Tuesday

Sheila has been home a day (and a half), may take some time to catch up on sleep! She had a wonderful trip, lots of stories. Cary and I went to Perkins again last night while she napped. The cats are happy.

I got in a walk yesterday, but when we started out today the rain drops also began. Of course, as soon as we got back in the house, it stopped. maybe later. Cloudy, windy. I plan to soak up some of it before heading home.

Rain after supper, about 6:30. Supper down the street at Hobo's. Now, will everything we have fit in our suitcases?

Sunday

Cary wanted to see the Birenbaums at the St. Nicholas Cemetery. He had a question about one of the tombstones, asked the couple who were sitting nearby if they knew anything about it. Naturally they did not, but they knew someone to call. The lady in the picture with Cary brought over some water in a spray bottle and some colored chalk so she could clean off and highlight the info on the stone. She was very knowledgeable about other things too.

If it's Saturday...there must be some yard sales

This is the church sale Cary saw advertised on the door of the fabric store in Plymouth. It was a beautiful day, blue skies and perfect temperatures. There were brats and German potato salad--he was in hog heaven!
I found a shirt that will probably fit in the suitcase and we were on our way to find some more sales.

At this estate sale Cary found a Packers cap and a Christmas-themed bow tie! I think the ladies working there joked about it enough that he went back and bought it.
Because the potato salad was so good, Cary decided that if he could find a container he would go back to the church sale with it and buy enough for a couple of days. And that is just what he did! He took the container into the bathroom at the church and gave it a good washing, then bought four scoops of the warm German potato salad to bring home for lunch. I also bought some snack bars from their huge collection of homemade desserts!

Later this evening Cary's cousin, Jim, and his wife, Kathy, came back for another visit. Perfect day.

Port Washington

Rain and clouds greeted us again this morning. We already had plans to drive to Port Washington for lunch, left a few hours early to look for some yard sales. There was a church rummage sale, but even with the half price sales, we left empty handed. At another sale I did find a small frying pan to replace a pretty scratched-up one in Sheila's kitchen.

Lunch was at New Port Shores, a place Cary read about in one of the local newspapers. Very good. And busy! Cary had stuffed shrimp while I had my usual salmon. Both came with marble rye bread, baked potato and either salad or seafood chowder.

Choppy waters thanks to the wind. A nice change from the 108 my son told me should be the high in Tucson today!

Thursday, another cousin visit

Cary's cousin, Perry, called this morning (I am glad we were up; this is the first day we got up before 8:00 a.m.) to see about getting together. We were going to his mom's place this morning anyway, so he met us at Aunt Shirley's. She and her son, Paul, live in the farmhouse on the Birenbaum Farm that has been in the family for over 100 years.

Cary enjoyed listening to Perry relate his experiences growing up on the farm. I took this photo of a picture hanging on the dining room wall. It shows the original farm house and barn, along with the current house and barn. Paul and his mom lease their land to another farmer. Paul works down the road on someone else's farm and owns property across from it.

After lunch we went to Cedar Grove to a new-to-us thrift store where Cary found another book and I bought two buttons and a pattern.
Because we could, we drove over to McDonald's after supper for an ice cream cone (me) and a sundae (Cary). Yum!

Prettiest Day Yet--cool, no rain. Wednesday

Cary has been wanting to go to the town of Hilbert ever since he read in his baby book that in October, 1944 (he was a month old), he took his first car trip to the town to visit his mom's uncle, Augie (of course, Augie). So that is what we did.

Our first stop was in Plymouth so I could check out the fabric store. Nice things, but nothing I needed. Cary noticed a sign on the door advertising a rummage sale on Saturday in Waldo, so there is another plan for the weekend.

We had lunch in Chilton, a cute deli and bakery called Hilde's. Sandwiches, a peanut bar (like his mom used to make) and coffee, all for just over $10!

Three thrift stores called our names and we found several goodies.

We did get to Hilbert, where one of the thrift stores was located. Cary has been wanting a watch to wear while he is here and found a new one for $5.

Our last stop was the Piggly Wiggly (locals call it "The Pig") to buy eggs and chicken on sale. The cats were thrilled to see us when we got home.
I took this picture later when they were relaxing. Nice end of the day for all concerned!

Rain all day! Tuesday

We woke up to rain and it never really stopped! After lunch we drove over to visit cousins, John and Marilyn Birenbaum. I wish I had thought to take pictures of her beautiful flowers and their vegetable garden.

I did get a picture of the cats patiently waiting for their lunch!

Michael and Peter are not always this patient though. If I am a little too late or too slow, Michael aggravates Peter so he will screech. I am not responding to that sort of behavior though!

Sheboygan

Cary wanted to go to the cemetery where several of his Illig ancestors are buried. It is is called the Immanual Lutheran Church Cemetery in Sheboygan County, Mosel.

Illig was the maiden name of his mom's mother.

This stone marks an Illig who fought in the 27th Wisconsin Regiment in the Civil War. August Illig lived until 1927.
After the cemetery we went to St. Vincent thrift store where Cary found a Green Bay Packers shirt that fit him perfectly. Maybe I will get a picture eventually. From there to Menard's, a much more inclusive store than Home Depot or Lowe's. You can even buy groceries there!
As we were leaving Menard's we saw this bus conversion to an RV. Cary was able to ask the driver what year it was--1956. They were getting ready to leave too or we might have asked to see inside!

Another thrift store, then to Perkins for supper--Monday is free pie day! And because we don't eat out every day, we went to Walmart for some groceries for the rest of the week.

We had rain off and on all day and the temperature really dropped from when we left the house after lunch. It is supposed to be cool for the next several days--yay!

Muggy! Sunday

First day of feeling heavy humidity. We walked to the little store at 9:00 a.m. to get a Milwaukee newspaper and nearly melted! After lunch we decided to drive over to Lake Michigan for something to do. Of course we had to stop at the moving sale--no finds--on the way. Pretty cool with the breeze off the water. Lots of people were there cooling off.

Later Cary's cousin Jim and his wife Kathy dropped by for a visit.

Wisconsin Visit, 2018

Sheila told us about this store in Sheboygan Falls: Evans. It has everything from plants and toys and hardware to clothes and even fabric. Fun shop!

Another view of the town

These are the falls that give the town of Sheboygan Falls its name.

The tower is from a former woolen mill in town.

Cary talked to this man about the mill and its conversion to apartments. He asked if we were looking for one and started describing them.
The name of the mill is on the tower.

We also found an estate/household sale with lots of interesting things--good thing we flew here and have no way to take anything home with us.

Home Sweet Home
