Heading Home

Apparently our trailer was parked long enough for a bird to claim squatter's rights and set up housekeeping. Luckily for her, she had not yet laid any eggs, because this part of the trailer is pretty essential to hooking up to the 5th wheel. I could hear a lot of scolding after Cary knocked out all the twigs and fuzz.

A wonderful sentiment wherever we go!

Albuquerque, Day Three

I had been wanting to see the Ernie Pyle Library, expecting it to be just a museum, like the presidential libraries that we have seen. But it is actually a functioning library in the former home of Ernie Pyle. It was the first branch library open in Albuquerque (1948).

Cary has read two or three books about Ernie, so he was very interested in seeing what personal items would be on display here.

We returned to Old Town and actually found parking on the street (no persnickety meter here, but stay tuned...)

The kale quesadilla with cheese and pinon nuts was as yummy as I hoped. While we ate we watched the owner work on the brick patio where they had taken out a huge cottonwood tree to make way for expanding the restaurant (The Quesadilla Grill).

Cary's tacos were as delicious as they were picturesque.

I asked the owner about the tablecloths; he said his wife made them from fabric he was sure she got at Hancock's. I was thinking it would make a great skirt or purse!

And on that note, we had to go to another fabric store. It was hard to narrow down my selections to just three--but I got something for a tablecloth for the trailer, a shirt and one piece was purchased just because it was so bright and pretty.

We did have some problems with a parking meter, as I mentioned above. Downtown we tried using dollar bills, and two different credit cards before the machine took a quarter, giving us 15 minutes to explore the theater we were interested in seeing.
The KiMo Theatre first opened in 1927 and saw stage and movie stars such as Tom Mix, Gloria Swanson, Sally Rand, and Lucille Ball performed there.

The vigas, resembling wood, are actually plaster.

The front of the theater. Slated for demolition after falling into disrepair, the city bought it in 1977 and citizens voted to renovate and preserve its unique architecture, the most recent work completed in 2000.

Another Great Day

Our first stop of the day was The Hip Stitch fabric shop. Suzanne, the owner, was lots of fun to talk to. I received a free fat quarter with a coupon from our RV Park, but I also found a book and a yard of fabric that I "needed."

Our next stop was Old Town. It took us three tries at the pay booth to get our receipt (but it seemed to take everyone that long to get it right), then we walked around all the tourist shops, resisting as much as we could. Lunch at the Church Street Café was just sandwiches, since we knew we had lots of leftovers from last night still in the refrigerator. Perfect weather to eat outside. Great service too.

I am eager to go back tomorrow (if it works out) to try the Quesadilla Café. It was closed today, but their menu board featured a kale quesadilla!

Just some of the artwork we saw around town; this was while waiting at a stoplight.

Albuquerque

Enchanted Trails RV Park is located along old Rte. 66. The office has lots of goodies for sale, but also lots of real oldies from the 1940s and 1950s that are just on display and not for sale. I didn't feel right taking pictures inside.

The vintage trailers and cars are on display, but this is also a fully functioning RV park with all the amenities.

These two are modern; they are hooked up and have folks staying in them.

Isn't this combination wonderful?

Many lilac bushes and lavender grow around the park too.
After spending the afternoon looking around the town and browsing an antique mall, we found Sadie's (we were on the way to El Pinto, a place we ate many years ago), one of the restaurants recommended by my hairdresser several years ago. Don't judge her by the way my hair looks now. It has done nothing but blow since we arrived in New Mexico and today we even had rain. Dinner was wonderful and you can probably tell we have leftovers for the next two or three days!

Catching Up

We probably should have spent an extra day in Las Cruces, but got to Alamogordo on Friday--the day before going over to see Wally and Patti. The RV Park, Edgington, has everything you need except wifi! A great little library (wish I had picked up the copy of Gone Girl that I saw, since the one on my Kindle vanished this morning) and only $15 a night, very nice owner.

Saturday afternoon Wally took Cary over to see a guy's collection of cars. The cars just sit there, out in the sun, wasting away. Hundreds of them.

What you see here is just the fiberglass!

Meanwhile, back in Wally's workshop, this is his motorcycle that he takes to Bonneville, an ongoing project!
Moxie shares the house with three dogs. They all get along just fine.

Sunday afternoon we arrived in Bernardo at the Kiva RV Park and Horse Motel, right off the highway, $14 a night unless we brought a horse, then it would be $89.

Dark clouds off in the horizon, but they moved off soon after I took the picture. A friend who lives in Santa Fe part of the year emailed me two days ago that they had snow! It melted right away, but I am not prepared for that kind of weather.

Cary's turn to stand by the trailer at our site. The drive took about three hours, not bad.  Albuquerque tomorrow.

Days Two and Three

Las Cruces: ate at La Posta, maybe for the last time!  Very disappointing. My chicken enchilada was, I think, a corn tortilla folded over a slice of cheddar cheese, then sprinkled with chunks of chicken. I ordered the red sauce on the side, because I have had the experience of getting sauce that was too bitter or too hot or both. This was bitter. No pictures. Cary's relleno was good, but he was also not impressed.

Thursday we made it to the Bernina store, always fun (for me), but I came away with no new fabric or patterns. Cary got lost in Hobby Lobby when we went looking for oilcloth for a new tablecloth for the trailer.

We did have a great spot in the RV park, #12. Here we are getting ready to leave.

Of course we need a picture from San Agustin Pass looking toward the Organ Mountains.

First Day of Our New Mexico Trip

Before we can pull out of the driveway, Cary has to make an adjustment or two to the truck.
It is windy here at home, so we expect more of the same along the road.

The rest stop/welcome center in Lordsburg is nice, picked up some brochures with ideas of things to see and do on the rest of our trip. Both of us our eager for some Mexican food at La Posta tomorrow night in Mesilla (after seeing all the colorful pictures in the brochures).

The Low Hi RV Park in Deming has a lot of full time occupants who are single; the LOW stands for "Loners On Wheels." This 'maze' seems to be a place where travelers have left mementos of themselves...even the little lighthouse below!

Here I am posing in front of the firepit (it's there, really), and below, Cary returns from checking out a big pit on the other side of the trees.

This is one of the most interesting trailers on the site. Paintings adorn each side and the back.

We were glad to sleep in Wednesday morning before heading to Las Cruces.
