Can September Really Be Over?

We got to the lighthouse early so we had time to visit with our great coworkers. Cary posed at the pipe organ for our first photo.

Bill brought out his corncob pipe for our last day!

                                                        And us!

A last look back at the lighthouse as we left work. Tours were great as usual. People were here from Australia and New Zealand, and also from St. Augustine, Florida. That guy had pictures on his phone of the flooding--just awful!

Another perfect day for pictures.

As soon as we left work we headed to an estate sale! No pictures, but we found lots of goodies! Some of the items are headed to my sister's for crafting. In fact, I have a bunch of stuff I have collected from yard sales and thrift stores--hope she has room for it all!

Walmart after lunch for sandwich fixings for the drive home--and some ice cream cones, because it will be hot as we travel south!

Beautiful Day (we have had a fair amount of them)

It rained yesterday, but the skies cleared, leaving lots of blue sky and puffy clouds.

Today we worked one and a half hours, had lots of water to walk through afterwards. I took several pictures in the lighthouse; it was the first day there was so much illumination from the sun that I thought there were extra lights turned on.

I can't believe we just have another hour and half to our time here.

The parlor was so bright today!

Misty and Cool

One last trip to Brookings for fuel before heading back to Tucson on Saturday--diesel was $5.49. Stops at the Grocery Outlet, Goodwill and the Humane Society Thrift Store too. Cary found some books and I got some magazines and a blouse. Before we left town we found another thrift shop/boutique--walking distance to the quilt shop.

Lunch at Mattie's Pancake House. Cary was able to enjoy eggs benedict, one of his favorites, and I had a shrimp melt.

There is a car theme going; the waitresses have some great tee shirts.

It never did warm up or clear up, but I got in my walks and Cary joined me on the last one.

I caught the deer again; they let me get pretty close.

Quite Chilly

The highlight of the day for Cary was exploring a fire engine. Unfortunately one of our neighbors was having a medical issue. His brother was trying to get into the trailer to see what was going on. One of the workers/longtime residents was nearby and called 9-1-1. When we got back from Walgreen's, three emergency vehicles were in front of his place and ours. Cary hung around because he has a thing about fire trucks. After the ambulance took the neighbor away, the fireman asked Cary if he wanted to check out the truck. I asked him to write about it.

I got the full tour, every nook and cranny, every tool, and assistive device that they use. They are a volunteer department. They earn a pittance for each call, ranging at $10-$15, depending on the type of call. The only thing he did not let me do was to drive it around the circle with lights and sirens going. Now I know that the tools they use on Chicago Fire are the real deal.

Unfortunately, I was in the trailer and had no idea what was going on, so no pictures!

Cary remembered to take a picture of us playing Mexican Train. Yesterday we played in the sunshine, short sleeved shirt and visor...not so much today!

Cold, Sunny, then Fog

I had to bundle up for my first walk of the day, but by noon the sun was out and we warmed up nicely.

A few days ago some of the neighbors invited me to play Mexican Train (with dominoes), so that is how I spent an hour or so three days this week. I will have to have Cary take our picture. He sat in on the first game and liked it. We will have to get a game of our own.

Work didn't start till 3:30. We put on boots to cross--it was even hard to see the trail from the parking lot in all the fog.

A family from the campground showed up and a few others who live in Crescent City too.

Beautiful Days

Friday we met our coworkers at the Chart Room for supper. I took a few pictures of the harbor seals while waiting to be seated.

Teare, Bill and us, picture by a waitress who is probably used to doing this for the tourists!

I needed to refill a prescription, but on the way to Walgreen's. we found a few yard sales. I found a few things, including a children's book about The White House.

Later it was just too nice to stay inside, so I took my book (Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind) outside to join Cary.

We didn't report for work until 3:00--some water to walk through, but a clear path as we left. Good tours, British Columbia was represented.

                                                 some fog

Supper was Subway sandwiches and potato salad.

September 22

We drove by the lighthouse around 11:00 a.m. after spending an hour at the library. The water was pretty high.

Tours, as usual, were great. Four people were there from the U.K. One couple was from Gilbert, Arizona, and I had to wonder if they knew any of my relatives!

After work I took this picture of the marine layer.

There is a woman who periodically camps in the park after working on  a road crew. We have talked to her several times, but today she stopped and waited for us to go by on our evening walk. She was being sent somewhere for a week and didn't think she would see us again before we left at the end of the month. Her last project was building fish ladders (see this: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/fish-ladder.htm for more info). I think that is what she is going to be doing next.

From the Library

We came to the library this morning just to go online. I don't have any new pictures since we haven't gone anywhere yet. Work starts at 2:30.

I am finishing another microwave bowl and Cary has a hat needs some repairs.

Yesterday went well at the lighthouse, needed boots going over but not on the way back. Stopped at Safeway for taco shells for the fish tacos I planned to prepare with some of the snapper our neighbor gave us. Delicious!

We woke up to sunshine and blue skies this morning. I may even get a chance to post pictures again.

September 20

Gray as we started to work. This picture is looking down the cement walkway. There is a bench there that we use to take off our boots if we had to wear them (we did), and put them on after work if the path is not clear (it wasn't).

When we got off work it was sunny again; I took this before.

Our internet here is so bad; I have waited an hour for the pictures to post after finally giving up last night. I may just save pictures until we get home!

We had good tours, short day (2:00-3:30), picked up some items for the gift store at the museum beforehand, put two more of my finished microwave bowls there too. Bill gave us a letter to mail, which we plan to do today. Friday we are all going to supper at the Chart Room as soon as we close up.

Two Days Off

Sunday was pretty rainy off and on. Cary spent a lot of time watching the programs on the Queen and the preparations for her funeral. And, of course, the Packers football game. I was able to finish sewing the microwave bowls I prepared yesterday.

Today was different. Beautiful blue skies again, some sun and puffy clouds, along with some remnants of the previous day's rain. We went to three different stores for things we needed. I did laundry. Cary grilled salmon for supper.

(this is a puddle left on the road)

The movie, The Lightkeepers, was on this afternoon. We had seen it several years ago, left the video with one of the couples we were working with at the time.

It was filmed at the Race Point Lighthouse in Massachusetts. I was thrilled to see an actual banjo clock!

The highlight of our day was receiving a letter from each of our four great grandchildren!

Cold and a little rain

We walked in water to and from the brief tours at the lighthouse. Everyone is always so glad we are open at all! Only gray today, so glad we got out yesterday.

After lunch I cut out two more microwave bowls and marked them, ready to sew another time.

I was able to add the deer picture to the post of two days ago.

A little sprinkle of rain while I was working on a crossword puzzle--I hear some again now.

Beautiful Day

The day started quite gray and chilly--as it has the last few days. This is how the water looked as we walked up to the lighthouse.

About an hour into the tours, this was the view from the kitchen window--blue sky and ocean!

After lunch we decided it was too nice a day to stay inside, or even just outside reading in the park. So we drove to St. George Reef Point.

Cary brought his binoculars to look at the lighthouse out there.

Can you find the lighthouse in the picture below?

Gorgeous views all around

If you look just to left of Cary's finger, you can see a little speck that is the St. George Reef Lighthouse. In reality it is 140 feet tall from the base, similar in height to a 15-story building.

So nice just to sit and enjoy.

Cold

It never warmed up today, although I did see some sunshine for a little while. Tours were good, and we didn't have to wear our boots going up to the lighthouse or coming back.

There were two young deer in our RV park this morning, but my internet service is so bad, I can't get the photo loaded. I will try again tomorrow.

Success!

We always watch Jeopardy, so I have to brag a little--I got the answer to Final Jeopardy when none of the contestants did! And I have to say I knew the answer because I did a report on the guy for whom the school is named when I was in 7th grade!

Yesterday, the man we are working with at the lighthouse told Cary that he looked like Mark Twain...a first! He told us there is a Twain impersonator who doesn't look as much like Twain as Cary does. I have to remember to tell him that Cary is usually told he resembles Tom Skerrit. Once it was Doc Severinson!

Nice, but cool this afternoon!

We got to work early (the tide cooperated) so we had time to visit with Teare and Bill before the door opened. Teare had made blackberry cobbler from berries brought to them a few nights ago by one of the visitors to the island! She gave us some in a to-go container which we are going to have later this evening.

I liked the view from the parlor window, so I took another picture!

Mary and Craig had given us a gift card to a local restaurant, The Seaquake, and today was when we decided to use it. I had trout; Cary had a burger and sweet potato fries. We split a bowl of clam chowder as an appetizer. I hope to have room for that cobbler before we go to bed. Good food!

The day seemed to cool off as the day wore on. I turned on the heat for a half hour or so this afternoon.

Tuesday

The lighthouse should probably have stayed closed today; the tide was only good for about 45 minutes. But we had lots of visitors and seemed happy to get the abbreviated tour that we gave them. Cary still feels that we are shortchanging them!

Stopped at the museum to pick up some things to take over tomorrow: pictures, masks and notepads.

Gorgeous day to sit outside reading and doing a crossword puzzle, although it was very foggy on the way to work and in the park when I took my morning walk.

Pumpkin waffles for supper--but somehow I never got around to packing any syrup. The honey Susan gave us last month--no, that was July--worked just great!

Mary sent me a text tonight, included a picture of their lunch or supper, served in the microwave bowls I made. It looks yummy.

Sunday Monday

Yesterday was pretty gloomy. The internet was in the same state, as was I. No sunshine to perk me up!

Bright spots of autumn leaves brought color to the day.

Our Monday morning walk to the lighthouse was the foggiest ever! We couldn't even tell if the path was open until we got right up on it. Luckily, since we hadn't put on our boots in the parking lot.

Great tours, folks from Germany; Chandler, Arizona; Illinois, Orlando, Florida; and more. Short day, and there was water across the path when we left.

It has been so nice working with Bill and Teare, makes a good job even better.

This afternoon the sun came out, blue sky and some puffy clouds. I did a load of laundry (which didn't finish drying in the dryer, so have stuff hanging in the bathroom and even spread out a few things on the picnic table) and some sewing.

A neighbor in the park, Ursula, and I have started walking together. Not always a plan, but it is nice when it works out that way. She and her husband are leaving Wednesday for home in Antioch, CA.
