Last Days of the Month

Short days, not enough time to spend with our coworkers and friends. I took some pictures of a couple of pages in an old keeper's instruction book. So many requirements!

We didn't meet the folks who arrived at the Battery Point parking lot, but this sure is a nice car!

Mary and Craig have been wonderful to work with. Today Mary gave us a thank you card, along with a gift card to a very nice (we have heard) restaurant in town--The Seaquake. We will miss them, but look forward to meeting the September keepers on Friday.

Chilly Today

We managed to get one of the visitors to take our picture this morning! Just a one-hour day, very good tours. The last family was from Canada, but the sister of one was from Iran. They all seemed to have a Middle Eastern accent. It was so cool today that one woman bought one of our Lighthouse afghans just to wrap up in before leaving!

Lobster bisque for lunch. The TV still works!

I hope to add more later.

Sunday

View from the parlor window, my part of the tour today

We opened early again today for tours, still not that many came in. A man from Canada, a couple from Mexico City (just wanted magnets), one very interested former Navy Seabee who couldn't get enough information, all folks very interested.

On our way home we stopped at Safeway, in the mood for soup for lunch, found a container of clam chowder for today and lobster bisque for tomorrow. We also saw Harlan and Jane. She is slowly recuperating after emergency surgery last spring. Harlan is the one is charge of schedules for the lighthouse, but his job has been Jane since then. They also usually spend at least a month in the lighthouse in the winter, but that may not happen this year.

More struggles with the TV. It was on this morning so we could watch Sunday Morning, but several hours of fooling around with it this afternoon before we were able to get some local news around 6:00 p.m.

I feel like a broken record!

Another beautiful day in Crescent City. Not very many folks out for tours, but we did open an hour earlier than is posted on a generic schedule (10-4, depending on tides). Seven inches of water greeted us as we headed out after work, thank goodness for our boots.

We knew we wanted to go back to the yard sale from yesterday, came home with $5 worth of stuff.

Laundry, another day of TV not working (fingers are crossed that it will come on eventually), fish tacos for supper with leftovers from the other night.

Catching Up

Yesterday was busy, several tours in the hour and a half we were open. I think I failed to mention that two days ago we had a couple from Denmark. Yesterday a gentleman from Cameroon, although he has lived in Salem for some time with his wife and four kids.

I liked the way the light looked in the corner of the Wayne Piland room.

Thursday night I fixed some cod that a neighbor gave us. I had never fixed this kind of fish, but decided I could figure it out--some panko crumbs in olive oil, lightly sautéed, turned out good.

Friday morning we got up, went to the post office to mail another Etsy order, stopped by the museum to see if a September schedule was out yet (no), then to the library to donate some magazines. I picked up a mystery from the free books shelf.

Cary had seen a sign for an estate sale, so we went off to find that. I can't believe I didn't take a picture--it was one of the largest we had ever seen! Cary got two wonderful coffee table books on lighthouses, some caulk, a Swiss Army knife...I found several mailing envelopes, address labels, a box of card making supplies, new package of colorful pens, and a new plastic tablecloth. There were several bins of free towels, so Cary got a bunch to keep in the trailer basement for future cleanups. We may go back tomorrow after work.

Another highlight of the day was the wonderful potluck. We took a salad and cheesecake, ate way too much and the hostess served many batches of frozen margaritas. Not my thing, but Cary had one.

More tomorrow...cranky internet...

Busy two days

Internet is crankier than normal. I will try posting more tomorrow. Ginger and Mark got here yesterday evening. We had supper at Denny's. Today they came to the park for a visit before going to Subway and having our picnic. Cooler today, but still pretty.

After work--I wore my boots and crossed in a few inches of water--we met them again for supper.

We are crossing the Apple Peddler off our list of possible restaurants. Very uneven service, although the waitress was giving it her best. Food was just not great. I always expect restaurants to serve meals better than I can make at home, and this just didn't get it.

Tuesday we walked on the beach before work. I still collect rocks and shells!

Picnic!

We awoke to blue sky and sunshine with lots of hope for a perfect day. After a few stops for errands, we got everything ready for our postponed picnic: plates, forks, napkins, cookies, potato salad, coffee. Subway for sandwiches, then drove to Pebble Beach to our picnic spot. It was wonderful.

Seagulls, I think, on the rock

And a view of the lighthouse while we ate

I did some sewing, but it was really too nice a day to be inside. I have sold most of the bowls I had made, so wanted to replenish the supply as a fundraiser for the lighthouse.

Sleepy Sunday

Except for a trip over to the parking lot by the lighthouse to rehang some signs and a quick stop at the Grocery Outlet, we had a pretty slow day. It was too cool to enjoy the picnic we planned so it was postponed. Walks, some tv, and a crossword puzzle.

We have high hopes for a fun-filled day tomorrow!

Interesting Day

The tide never really got low enough to cross the path up to the lighthouse. But we crossed on the rocks with the help of our hiking sticks.

These are a few of the guys who call themselves Clampers. Not all of them took tours, but they were quite interested in the history of Crescent City and the lighthouse. Notice the two guys on the left: one is an actual person while the other is a cardboard replica of one of their members who died. They didn't want him to miss it!

Good to be back at the lighthouse

Karen texted me this morning, asked that we stop by to pick up a package that needed to go over to the lighthouse. When we got there she had a box of pastries from her daughter's "Lillie's Little Doughnut Shop." Yum! We saved them till after work.

Great group of folks again. Some of the folks were from a group we expect tomorrow. Apparently they are the cooks, not able to tour tomorrow. According to Google, the Clampers, as they call themselves  are: Clampus Vitus – the Clampers – were gold miners and prospectors in the California gold rush days. The club grew as a parody of Masons and Oddfellows, with initiation rituals and rites that were meant to amuse and entertain with rough-housing antics and irreverent humor.

We traded off which parts of the tours we led, especially wanting Mary to rest as much as possible. I went up to the tower to get pictures. It is probably the last time I go up there--getting off the ladder and back on again requires more agility than I seem to have!

The view was worth it though.

The countries represented by some of the visitors are The Netherlands and British Columbia by way of Slovakia.

Good News

Good news on two fronts: the truck just had its fuel filter replaced, a minor fix, and secondly, we found out we can go to work tomorrow! Our hours will be 10-1:30. We are ready.

This morning was foggy. It never did warm up much, so I got to wear a turtleneck and sweatshirt all day, then added a jacket to take walks.

After lunch we went to a neighbor's pre-yard sale. He had moved out of his trailer and was selling everything in it. Naturally we found some things we had to have.

Later I joined my Zoom book group to discuss The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu, but with not enough internet oomph, I had to quit. I will try again in September with our next book. Everyone always has so much to offer.

It will be nice to get out again. I am looking forward to some walks on the beach and picnics in the coming weeks.

Beautiful Wednesday

When the thrift store near us opened, we walked over (still trying not to drive the truck until it is checked out and worked on). Cary found a set of dominos (can't believe we didn't bring any games with us). I got a book of sewing intended for girls using existing t shirts, jeans, and so on without needing a sewing machine, a book of puzzles and a corduroy shirt jacket. All for $4.

I started preparing the ingredients for our veggie pizza: baking the crescent rolls, mixing the cream cheese, thousand island dressing mix and mayo, then chopping up veggies. It turned out great, enough for lunch tomorrow too. Thanks, Susan!

Lots of walking, a bike ride, reading and getting another Etsy order ready to mail on Friday. Good day.

Tuesday

Cooler still today. I actually got to wear one of my turtlenecks all day, with a sweater and jacket when I took walks.

I had two packages to mail, so we went to the post office, then picked up a few things at Walmart for future meals. My friend, Susan, gave me a recipe for veggie pizza using crescent rolls, so that will be supper tomorrow night (tonight I had already thawed out some enchiladas).

Most of the rest of the day was spent trying to figure out once again why the TV wasn't working. Glad that is our worst problem. It came back on about 5:45 p.m.

I called Karen at the museum to check on our Saturday schedule; we report at 11:00 to lead tours for a group of men who call themselves, "Drinkers With a History Problem!" Should not be boring.

Cooler Today

Cary took the truck to George's Garage to have it looked at. He has a Thursday appointment to take it back. They will do a pressure test on the lift pump.
I discovered some lighting over my sewing area, so decided it would be a good day to put some more microwave bowls together.

Apparently the lighting wasn't good enough for me to notice these are out of focus! I have the parts on the ironing board (AKA a shelf) that I will sew together.

Sewing in my corner

The finished product

At this point I decided to wind my bobbin with a new thread (red)for the next bowl, forgetting what a challenge it is to wind a bobbin on this machine. It got tangled on the spool, so I decided I had done enough sewing for one day. Several bowls are waiting construction!

It stayed cool most of the day (nice). We took a few walks and Cary did some bicycling. Ginger and I talked about their visit; they will come next week when it is supposed to be extra hot in Salem.

Sunday Testing

After breakfast I got out the testing kit we had, reread the directions and succeeded in using it.

First step, insert the swab, swirl around five times in each nostril, taking 15 seconds with each side.

After inserting the swab into the bottom part of the above tube, swirling and squeezing to get all the collection, three drops are inserted into the space provided. We then waited 15 minutes for results.

                                                                 This shows we are okay!

The rest of the day was taking care of some more chores. I got out some fabric to cut out more microwave bowls, should have taken pictures. We got in lots of walking; Cary rode his bike a few times.

Our friends in Salem, Ginger and Mark, want to come see us. She called so we could discuss a good day. Since we are off this week, it would seem that now is a good time.

Cary takes the truck in tomorrow to have it checked out, fingers crossed that it is something minor.

Beautiful Saturday

We were able to locate a few yard sales. Cary got a wire brush,
On the Road (by Kerouac), a sunscreen for the truck and a couple other useful items. I found fabric!

The truck sort of sputtered at the last yard sale, so we came straight back to the trailer. He will take it somewhere Monday to see if someone can help.

Since we had to be here, we took advantage of some things on our to-do lists: washing windows, doing two loads of laundry and cleaning the bathroom.

Beautiful day to sit outside. We both read, but I also took the time to remove a pocket from a robe I made several years ago. One of the pieces of fabric I bought today will be a much better choice.
Later this afternoon Richard stopped by on his bicycle. He and Gudrun used to stay in this park, but they moved to one closer to the ocean with better wifi and TV. We visited with them a week or so ago. They live in Lake Havasu.

Staying Busy, Missing the Lighthouse

Today I took pictures around our park. It was a beautiful day again.

Thursday we ran some errands. I needed to mail a package and pay the credit card bill at the local Chase bank (for some reason I couldn't get my computer to recognize our account). Cary dropped me at a new fabric store while he went to Home Depot. I purchased three fabric squares (called fat quarters) to make more microwave bowls. I got out the sewing machine, finished a bowl I had started before we left Tucson, and quit for lack of light. I need to figure out how I can work more comfortably, because I really want to sew when I have the time.

This was the second estate sale found today. Nothing wonderful at either, but nice to get out. Will look for more sales tomorrow.

Craig checked in to say Mary was doing better and that he has shown no symptoms. Fingers crossed for them, and we are eager to return to give tours in a week.

Brookings and more

Beautiful, sunny morning

I like the location of our trailer. You can see how Cary currently has the dome mounted. It gave us fits later in the day, had to call customer support--probably took almost an hour counting being on hold and trying several different attacks to get it working again!

The little trees here are new to the tent area this year.

Sunshine, the aptly named vintage trailer makes an appearance every year from Grants Pass. We were able to look inside a few years ago--very cute!

We drove up to Brookings for thrift stores and Pancho's great Mexican food. It was nice to be able to sit outside. Pretty red flowers were at my elbow.

Disappointing News

We had a productive day, but got to work around 1:45, only to meet Craig in the parking lot and find out Mary tested positive for Covid! We talked about it for some time, and of course, the tours would have to be cancelled. Mary is so conscientious, wears masks everywhere, has had all her shots, really takes care of herself. Cary and I stopped by the museum to talk to Karen, who then contacted Harlan who is in charge of things now. Harlan called me about an hour later. He had decided it was just good science to close the lighthouse for ten days. We will stay in touch with Craig and Mary to see how they are doing. So far, he tests negative and they are staying apart. We have our fingers crossed for them--and for ourselves. It is scary. I have some tests with us that my daughter-in-law gave us, so we will test in a few days. No symptoms yet.

Washed two loads of clothes, replenished some groceries (also a broken coffee carafe--found one at Sylvia's antiques and bookstore), mailed an Etsy order, and did lots of walking. Cary has been able to take at least one bike ride every day.

Another Short Day

Once again we had to wait for the tide to go out before crossing for work. But we had entertainment. The picnic table always brings wildlife to feast after (and during) family gatherings. Several peanuts were scattered at our feet, so Mr. Seagull (who must have wonderful eyesight) very carefully picked up every one. Some one had left an unopened bag of peanuts on the bench next to me. The seagull hopped up, grabbed the bag and scurried a few yards away where he proceeded to peck at the bag until it opened. Then he took it in his beak and shook it till all the nuts spread around him. He ate all of them, pecked at the bag some more and finally came back to where we were sitting because he had missed two pieces of nuts by our feet. So funny.

We did finally make it across, just in time in turns out. A summer camp program of kids from Portland were just finishing their tour, so we were able to help with the regular visitors. The country of the day was Argentina. Everyone was great. We made it back across just as the water was slowly coming in.

This evening Cary got our Dish working and he is currently watching Top Gun. 😀

Dodging Water both directions

We were supposed to start tours at 11:30, but water was blocking the path for quite some time later. Lots of people braved crossing on the rocks, but we are not that steady. I finally relented, feeling guilty for leaving Mary and Craig to do tours with the folks who did make it up there, crossed on a few rocks and did okay.

Great tours as well, and it is refreshing to find that just about everyone is thoughtful, kind and considerate. While a couple of women were waiting to take the tour they were talking with Cary. Two other couples came up and the first two ladies (from Houston) offered to pay their admission! One couple (who Cary thought really could use the help) took them up on it. The one lady from Houston later told me "the cute guy must be your husband!" I agreed.

There is a pump organ in the parlor. Cary always tells the people that the stops give different sounds, and a 6-year-old asked if it played rock and roll.

The tide had already started to come in as we left at 2:30, more balancing on the rocks! So grateful for our walking sticks.

Our Longest Day Saturday

I wasn't able to get online last night, so this is a report from Saturday.

We switched things around today, everyone taking a turn going through with the same group. Cary and Craig don't know the cash register yet (and maybe never will), so Mary and I alternated there, but still got to lead a tour. Today we had a man from Russia, a family from British Columbia, a woman and her tiny daughter also from Russia and families who spoke to each other in languages we didn't understand, but were and had been living in the states for some time. Then there is always a coincidence of some sort; one couple came from Tucson, live in Oro Valley less than five miles from us!

After work we drove by a yard sale, had to stop, but made no purchases.

On the home front, the Dish quit working and was reported to be "growling" by several of our park neighbors! Cary has it boxed up ready to go back to Fed Ex tomorrow! I am not sure what his plan is. Last night we watched a video that was in the laundry room. And did lots of reading. Oh, and a load of laundry since I was running out of underwear!

Cooler and Breezy

Part of my "job" today was talking about the first lighthouse keepers, some things about the structure and changes made since it was first occupied in 1856--a kitchen and bathroom were added about 50-60 years later. The pictures on the mantel are of the Jeffrey family. John and Nellie stayed 39 years.

We decided we needed some TV. Several folks in the park have a setup like this, called Dish On the Go. I ordered one and it arrived today.

Thank goodness for a neighbor, Rudy, who spent several hours helping two fairly ignorant people when it comes to this sort of technology go through the steps and making the phone call and waiting for it to actually kick in. We only pay for the service when we use it (by the month), will store it when we leave here.

I am hoping it is fairly intuitive once we actually turn it off and want to use it again tomorrow!

Beautiful Day

We woke up cool this morning, lots of fog as we approached the lighthouse.

Cary spent part of the morning talking about the light that is on display in the gift shop.

After a few hours taking money in the gift shop, I traded places with Mary to describe this room, one of the bedrooms on the second floor.

After work, this is what everything looked like: blue sky and sunshine.

We decided to go to the Chart Room for supper. This was our view from our table. You can see some harbor seals and in the distance, the lighthouse and island.

After supper we stopped by another RV park to visit friends who had been staying at Village Camper Inn, but decided to move to get better TV and internet connections. Now we are ready to watch a video.

Home Sweet Home
